I'm pretty damn sure most of the people on this forum have seen at least bits of DBZ (and if not then what the hell are you doing here?), but I have to wonder how many of you read/watched Dragonball, the beginning of the series where things were more goofy and such? From what I've seen, not as many people have read/watched Dragonball like they have DBZ, and unlike GT you don't have much of an excuse for not doing so.

So yeah...which one of you actually did read/watch Dragonball?

I've seen the anime, but it's been a long time... and unfortunately, it was only the dub.
That being said, I've got the manga, and have read through it many times.

Because I'm a nerd. :P

But that probably went without saying. XD

When I was a kid I watched a lot of animes but I usually missed a lot of episodes so I didn't get the story right in many of those. Dragon Ball was the third anime, after Dragon Ball Z and Naruto, where I missed the least episodes and got an idea of where the story was going. I might re-watch it eventually to get my shit right but I don't plan on doing it before reaching the latest episode of Fairy Tail and I'm only near the middle (I'm slow watching animes).

Just like how my experience with DBZ has been pretty much only manga, same goes for Dragonball.  It was cute, but a bit too sketchy for my tastes.   Gotta give it credit though, it was what spawned DBZ after all. 8)

Well I've read bits of the manga and saw a great deal of the anime (regrettably in dub as well), but like Nia it's been a very long time since I've done so. However, I at least know that the whole Dragonball series (DBZ included) goes under that name. I think the "Z" in DBZ was either a Toei thing, Funi/Ocean Dub thing, or just something by the anime in general as even the dub mangas follow under the single "Dragonball" name.

As far as I know, they wanted to separate Dragon Ball in two parts (I think all the manga is under one single title but @Nia can correct me if I'm wrong) and Toriyama gave the title to Toei as "Dragon Ball 2" but whomever got the name thought it was a Z and it got registered as Dragon Ball Z and turns out they liked it. I remember another possible name was "Dragon Ball: The Adventure of Gohan".

Yep.
In Japan, the manga is a collective 42 volume series simply titled "Dragon Ball." When the second anime began airing, the titled it "Z." Supposedly it was supposed to be called Dragon Ball 2, but since Z and 2 look similar, it wound up being Dragon Ball Z.

However, when the manga hit the US, it was split between 16 volumes of Dragon Ball, and 26 volumes of Dragon Ball Z (although, it uses the original title artwork, referencing the actual volume numbers, and even says the Japanese version is just Dragon Ball).

Case in point:
Spoiler for Hidden:
Goku's jacket still references that it's Dragon Ball volume 17, but the release was labeled as Dragon Ball Z volume 1. This was likely done to capitalize of the exploding popularity of the anime when it hit Cartoon Network in the late 90s.

I did see the first Dragon Ball, ever since the beginning. In the Latinamerican Cartoon Network we also had Toonami(although it was released years after the american Toonami), and this Toonami broadcasted the first Dragon Ball along with other golden animes (but not as much as the american version of Toonami). It was Dragon Ball, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Inuyasha, Ranma 1/2, Captain Tsubasa, Zatch Bell, Rave Master, Cyborg 009, Saint Seiya, Astro Boy, One Piece, Trigun, Naruto, etc.

The first broadcast of Dragon Ball was the original goofy one. It broadcasted the whole series at least twice, along with the movies. Eventually one night I remember watching the last episode of Dragon Ball and when I was expecting the first episode of Dragon Ball (thought it would be rebroadcasted), another opening appeared, much similar to Dragon Ball, and it was the opening of DBZ. And so I watched the whole series and here I am, many years after that.

Nowadays the first Dragon Ball gets rebroadcasted alot in a channel called ToonCast, which has alot of vintage CartoonNetwork shows. I love watching Samurai Jack there.

Me too :D I also saw DB and DBZ, can't remember if GT too, in Magic Kids Channel (best toon channel ever, sadly it doesn't exist anymore since late 90's  :'()

I did thoroughly enjoy DragonBall. I especially enjoyed it when Goku was a teenager at the World Martial Arts tournament. So epic.

I find that DBZ to be my favourite though.

I watched them all and love Dragonball and DBZ. GT was okay. Watched all the movies. Read some of dragonball and dbz but never completed either. Prefer the TV I guess lol

I personally  have always preferred Dragonball > DBZ. I felt there was a better storyline and more character complexity  and development. Everything was new for Goku in DB and we got to grow with him, Bulma, Yamcha, Krillin, and the whole gang. There was always something new and fun in Dragonball and it wasnt all about saving the Earth and Universe for the most part. Also I liked how the fighters were really strong but not overwhelmingly powerful, it was almost believable in a sense in Dragonball but by the end of DBZ everyone was so OP it was immeasurable lol.

This ^

I used to love animes up to the point where the powers all got ridiculously destructive but this I noticed that a big % of animes eventually get to that point so I just got used to it. I stopped watching Naruto when I said "Nope, massive destruction" and then continued watching it because of some friends who insisted. Then I started with Bleach and loved it too much just to quit it because of that and after those two and DBZ, every other anime I've seen is not really destructive in comparison... Specially if compared to DBZ.

I've re-read the manga more times than i've watched the entirety of the anime, that's for sure.
Would take x3 as long probably.

But i do go back and watch specific episodes, like the Saiyaman saga (though filler, i find it hilarious watching gohan go to school) and World Tournament saga.

I personally find Dragonball to be alot more hilarious and less intense compared to dbz.
and i like that. so i'd say dragonball was my favorite of the two.

I personally enjoy both sides. Just as Goku himself grew and aged, the world within the series changed as well.

Really, the only arc that's a bit tough to accept as the series sometimes is the Jinzoningen/Cell saga, which were fairly devoid of humor by comparison. Even though they have separate anime, I gravitate more toward the manga, and for me, it's one massive story.

I've watched the series at least 8 times and counting (not over exaggerating I SWEAR) I Started when I was four watched all the episodes over and over again for many many years since I didn't know about other anime. In fact I still watch it everyday. I think I could easily answer most of your questions. I've tried asking my friends who think they know everything about Dragon Ball but actually don't know anything.
