Don't forget:

A lot of people more or less forget about Bulma after DBZ, but she is still a Capsule Corp inventor.

I agree on Light, too. That whole "N and M together were superior!" plot twist at the end of the series was literally one of the most idiotic endings to a smart series I've ever seen.

The difference between knowledge and intelligence is analogous to the difference between owning a gun and knowing how to shoot it. Bulma is strapped(has a lot of knowledge) but she can barely aim. The other characters mentioned here are sporting just a 9mm, but are excellent marksman.

Well, that's my take on it.

Intelligence
1. the ability to acquire and apply knowledge and skills.

I'd say that sounds about right for Bulma.

However, if we're talking tactical acumen, then I'd agree it isn't her forte. As far as tactics go, I guess I'd pay more attention to:

With the exception of maybe Chopper.

I'm not saying that Bulma is incapable, but she's capable to a far lesser extent than some of the other people mentioned in this thread. She really only seems smarter by a larger margin because she comes from a position of privilege in a society far more advanced, so knowledge was MUCH easier for her to acquire. I think if the other characters here had her knowledge their own inventions would run circles around Bulma's

I agree to some extent, and disagree to others. I definitely agree that she had an edge in being able to learn due to being the daughter of a wealthy inventor, but she still had the intellect to accumulate that knowledge as well as the problem solving skills necessary to apply them in practice (as well as invent entirely new things).

I'd also disagree that their inventions would necessarily be greater than hers, because they (at least the ones I know of from the thread) are smart in different ways.

Oh, and (unrelated to Bulma) here's a character I really should've considered, but completely forgot about:

Isn't that the guy from Golden Boy (I think that was the name of the anime)?
That was such a dumb (in a good way) anime.

Yep, Kintaro Oe. :D Insanely fast learner, not just with the ability to learn but the motivation to learn and to do things. He's also just a generally nice person who helps anyone he can.
He's basically L, if L had more motivation to learn about everything rather than focusing entirely on problem solving, and generally if he wasn't a selfish prick.

It's a shame they only made a 6 ep OVA for it. :( I think the manga had around 10 volumes, but it was never translated into English.

Oh, and don't forget Goku's father.

You forgot, L would also have to be a tremendous pervert of Muten Roshi proportions. XD

Also, Bardock was never a "brilliant scientist."
Just some of that good old fashioned bad rewriting. XD

Also, I'd forgotten about more of Toriyama's weird genius characters.

The brains of L, the motivation and good heart of Goku, and the perversion of Roshi.
That's probably the best description of Kintaro I've ever seen.

Ohh, I forgot about Turbo actually. Did you ever read the Dr Slump manga? Random tangent but I really loved all the little activities etc between chapters. Dunno if they ever did that on scanlations (I read retail) but I love when mangaka do that. Was a shame there was nothing similar in Dragonball. xD

There's also:

Toriyama really likes the hot young inventor chicks, huh? :D

I haven't finished Dr. Slump, but I have the first 4 volumes. Great series though.
And yeah, Lucca looked an awful lot like Bulma.

And yeah, nothing beat the Akira Toriyama Non-fiction Doodle Theater. XD

Oh it's pretty good! It's one of the first manga series I purchased (and the first of Toriyama's). Definitely worth the price. :D

Also if we're talking about how intelligent a character is, rather than their well of knowledge, I guess Ayla would count:

Sure, she's a prehistoric cavewoman, but she remarkably doesn't have too much difficulty coming to terms with modern concepts and manages to hold her own intellectually through-out the rest of the game.

It actually introduces an interesting dynamic between intelligence vs knowledge. Magus was definitely a more Knowledgeable character, but I'd argue that Ayla had a higher capacity for intellect.
