Graphic Design / Non-specific Nia Art Thread
« on: October 18, 2015, 05:06:21 AM »
Since the general member art threads (not the individual ones) seem to be completely unused by anyone these days, and given that I feel if I'm gonna necropost, it may as well be on my own thread, I'm gonna follow suit with some of the other people on forums, and open my own thread... despite me seeming to remember that I said I wouldn't do such a thing (also because I'm a pain in the ass).

So, enough exposition!

Dragonball General Discussion / On this day, 30 years ago...
« on: November 21, 2014, 04:35:54 AM »
On November 20th, 1984, a weekly anthology by the name of Weekly Shonen Jump ran the first chapter of a series penned by Akira Toriyama, who up 'till then had been best known for the gag series "Dr. Slump."

This new story began with the chronicles of a wild haired boy with a monkey tail named Son Goku, who began a quest to find the legendary Dragon Balls, ancient artifacts that, when brought together, could summon a Dragon God with the power to grant a single wish.
As more villains grew aware of the Dragon Balls, and as Goku himself learned his hideous origins as a member of a violent warrior race known as the Saiyajin, the scale of the battles grew with them... to the point where the entire universe was at stake.

Here's to another 30 years of Goku!

And as a bonus, it seems the cool people at Kanzenshuu has a cool compilation guide (for free, no less) on their site:

January 6th, 2015 Viz Media is releasing the single volume Jaco the Galactic Patrolman series, which serves as a prelude to the original Dragon Ball (including the bonus chapter, Dragon Ball Minus).

I've gotta say, I don't know much about the series, except for Dragon Ball Minus, but it seems to tie in briefly with Dragon Ball Online (the Kaioshin of Time is briefly mentioned, and the Galactic Patrol seems to be related to the Time Patrol that Trunks is involved with in DBO). Also, Bulma's sister is apparently one of the main characters.
And of course, Dragon Ball Minus was the reveal of Goku's mother, Gine, and several other events depicted very differently from the Bardock TV special. It also ties Battle of Gods to the canon (Freeza briefly mentions the Super-Saiyajin God before he decides to wipe out Planet Vegeta).

It's $8.99, the standard for a Shonen Jump volume, and is available both in the graphic novel format and a digital release. From what I've heard, the translation is solid as well (having only read an unofficial translation myself), but that's not a surprise.

As per usual, this info comes from the fine folks at Kanzenshuu.

Off Topic / Battle of Gods Extended Edition
« on: August 21, 2014, 09:40:50 PM »
Since I haven't seen it posted yet, Battle of Gods has been announced for a home release on October 7.
Not only that, but it includes the additional 20 minutes from the Japanese TV version.

It'll be available for a DVD/Blu-ray combo for $34.98, a DVD only version, or a digital download.

Once again, this info is courtesy of the fine folks at Kanzenshuu:

Graphic Design / Just a little something for DBOR fans...
« on: July 26, 2014, 01:46:51 AM »
So a few days ago, I was joking around with Dumke, and somehow talked myself into doing a sort of promotional image for DBOR.

Since he enjoyed it quite a bit, and suggested I do so, I'll post the image for everyone to get a glimpse at:

I hope everyone enjoys it. ^^

Oh, and try and see if you can guess what game's box art the image is based off of. XD

Toriyama revealed some new stuff about Dragon Ball in some recent interviews:

The Act of Fusion

    It’s hard, but they can!
I think it’s possible to merge no matter the conditions, as long as it all goes well. I even think it’s possible for a larger number of people. However, since it’s quite hard for both parties to strike that delicate balance, it’s very difficult for two extremely different people to fuse. In that sense, synchronized swimmers would probably be really good at Fusion. By the way, there are many different types of Fusion, and the kind Goku learned is the one for increasing battle power.

The Birth of Babidi

    Bibidi split in two!
Rather than a child, he’s more like Bibidi’s doppelganger. He’d split up whenever there was anything difficult for just a single person to do. He could increase the number of doppelgangers even more, but his magical powers would weaken in proportion. Now that Bibidi is dead and Babidi has become the only one, he’s regained all the original magical power.

Mr. Satan’s Wife

Satan’s wife was a beautiful singer named Miguel!
Since she was named “Miguel (archangel)”, during their marriage a big fuss was made about how “an angel is marrying a devil!”

As usual, this translated info comes from the fine people at Kanzenshuu, if you wanna read the original article:

Online Videos / Because it had to be done.
« on: June 06, 2014, 08:20:04 PM »
Okay, so we all hate Dragon Ball Evolution. So does this guy.
Forgive his mispronunciations, as he isn't all that familiar with the source material, but you should get a laugh out of it, especially the bonus round.

Also, these are usually 5-10 minutes long. This is clearly a special case.

Ah, also the sound has some weird glitches at about 12:30, but while annoying, the rest of the video is damn funny.

Well, after all this time of dragging their ass, Funimation has announced that Battle of Gods is FINALLY coming out in the U.S. with a limited viewing in theaters in August on the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 9th.

For those living here who haven't seen it, or want to see it with the English cast here's the official site, complete with a trailer:

Strangely enough, the movie is also appearing in Canadian theaters despite them having their own Dragon Ball Z dub, which is a bit surprising (especially given the news that they're supposedly working on a Kai dub of their own).

Off Topic / Artwork
« on: May 12, 2014, 02:35:35 PM »
Since some other people have been showing off their artwork, I thought I'd show some of mine.

I've included the one without the added background and aura, and one with.

Fixed the picture quality issue. They now display properly now.

Forum Games / What gender do you believe me to really be?
« on: May 08, 2014, 03:04:09 PM »
Since everyone is always wondering, and that half of what I say about myself is a lie, I decided this might be fun for a few laughs.
Is Nia the manliest of all men, or the most delicate of ladies? Perhaps the tomboyish amazon of the forums, or an overly sensitive boy?

Remember, everything I've said about myself may have been a total lie. I've even used trick questions here and there before.

So let's begin the game again! <3

So, we've all seen the Bardock TV special, or at least Bardock's final rebellion against Freeza. And we all love it, of course.

But as you all know, Toriyama recently reimagined the character's story with the Dragon Ball Minus chapter in Jaco the Galactic Patrolman. Obviously, this has a tremendously different plot. According to this, Goku was 3 years old before being sent to Earth, whereas he was dipicted as a newborn infant immediately sent to Earth in the anime.

Since the Bardock TV special has been so immortalized, this is somewhat a shocking difference. But let's look look at some of the inconsistencies with it:
Obviously, Toriyama enjoyed Bardock's final challenge against Freeza, since it was depicted in the manga (albeit for two panels). But there was no way that a newborn Kakarrot could have had any memory what so ever of his time on Planet Vegeta in the TV series.

I believe Raditz said "There's no way you could have forgotten our mission... or me!" Yet, he wasn't depicted in the least bit in the TV special. Even for a race as remarkable as the Saiyajin, I don't see how a newborn baby could possibly retain the information necessary for remembering a mission. So Toriyama's new story actually lines up pretty well with the original story.

So does that mean Toriyama did what he does, and go and alter the history of Dragon Ball? Or should we still accept the TV special as canon?

Personally, I've gotta go with the new story, because while I like the TV Special, Toriyama personally wrote this new story. And it gets extra points for Gine.

Talk to Moderator/Admin / Can we have someone regulate the ShoutBox?
« on: April 16, 2014, 02:54:08 PM »
Today, I've encountered some really sick conversations in the ShoutBox. I'm all for freedom of speech, but I don't think people talking about genocide and murder is appropriate anywhere, especially not here.
The stuff they've been talking about is highly disturbing, and I really wish someone would help get it under control.

The typical flaming and trolling is bad enough, but I really don't want to deal with this kind of stuff. This is getting absolutely out of control, and I really hope that these people will be prevented from spreading this kind of behavior.

Ultimately, I have no choice but to leave it in the hands of you, the administrators, but I really truly hope that you'll stop this.
A few light-hearted jabs here and there are fine, but after the things that have been said today, it's becoming increasingly difficult to deal with the level of disgusting content on this forum. This is no longer a case of trolling or flaming, this is truly offensive material.

I realize the development of DBOR takes priority, but I no longer can simply stand by and allow this kind of content. The last thing we need is people acting like that in the game.

Suggestions / What about a Character Generator?
« on: April 16, 2014, 05:48:49 AM »
I don't mean in-game, but what about something that allows us to see a basic template of the races and think about what we want our character's appearance to be.

They did something like that for Dragon Age: Origins before it came out.

It doesn't have to be anything fancy, even a simple flash thing would be neat.

Or would that be too much of a pain in the butt (I don't want to slow down the development)?

Okay, so I think we can all agree that for the most part, the Funi dub is awful. With the exception of a couple voices, nearly every character was miscast. So here's some of the characters I'd pick.

Son Goku - Roger Craig Smith (Using his Chris Redfield voice)
Vegeta - Crispin Freeman (Seriously, just watch him as Jeremiah in Code: Geass)
Young Gohan- I actually don't really have a preference here as long as it's not Stephanie Nadolny.
Buu Saga Gohan- Let's just stick with Kyle Herbert, since he was openly and proudly dorky here.
Mirai no Trunks- This is a tough one...maybe Johnny Yong Bosch?
Piccolo- Scott McNeil. Nuff said.
Kuririn- I've got nothin'. Personally, I liked Terry Klassen, but I know a lot of people hated him.
Yamcha- Troy Baker. Seriously, that would just fit so well.
Tenshinhan- I actually like the Funi voice here. John Burgmeier did a fine job.
Chaozu- I don't freakin' care. Chaozu annoys me.
Goten- I don't really know. I don't dislike the Funi voice, but I don't particularly like it either.
Chibi Trunks- I love Laura Bailey, but this needs someone else. Any suggestions?
Bardock- While I like Sonny Strait as Bardock, how about Matthew Mercier?

Raditz- I'm sticking with the Ocean dub voice here. Justin Cook was good though.
Nappa- Just...anyone who isn't Phil Parsons. God I hate Phil Parsons.
Freeza- I like the Kai voice and all, but let's try something unique. Maybe David Humphrey (Shadow in
           Sonic Adventure 2)?
Cell- Again, I surprisingly enjoyed the original Funi voice. Dameon Clarke is actually a good voice actor.

Agree? Disagree? Don't give a crap?

Suggestions / Quasi / False Super-Saiyajin
« on: April 11, 2014, 05:03:59 PM »
Maybe this was in the original (I never played it), but what about some kind of pseudo transformation that triggers when you've got low HP, like Goku used in movie 4?
Or would it just be too similar to Kaioken (was that in the original either)?
